Apprenticeships

We recently worked in partnership with our client A2Dominion, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Brooklands College in Surrey to provide a Recruitment and Skills Volunteering Day The open day organized by A2Dominion’s Employment & Training Coordinator Angela Torr introduced the young residents to various bodies including college staff, CITB representative, DW Contractors staff and expert tuition on CV writing and job applications from Connexions careers advice service.
The objective of the day was to provide our clients’ residents, students and job seekers living within A2Dominion’s communities the opportunity to learn, understand and where relevant act upon the following:

  • Career options, routes into paid work and local job opportunities
  • Workshop providing support with CVs and advice about job search
  • Presentation about the benefits of volunteering and work placements with A2D
  • Information about a future ‘On the job’ painting skills day taking place at Ashford Youth Centre where they had the opportunity to work on redecorating internal areas with qualified tradespeople
  • Information from DW Contractors about the work we do and our contract for A2Dominion
  • Apprenticeships (general information), the role of CITB and criteria for application (on-line test – examples). Role with DW Contractors and East Berkshire college regarding apprenticeship opportunity

  • dw volunteers

Left to right: Nathaniel Withey, Alex Barrett, Olly Dakin, George Davis: all volunteers from A2Dominion "Open Day"

Angela Torr: Employment & Training Co-ordinator (A2Dominion) along with local volunteers.

Far left: Keith Hartill and David Fredericks, DW Contractors painters and decorators with Ray Smith (crouching)

The four lads were then invited to join DW Contractors to gain work experience on their Spelthorne Estate contract based in Edinburgh Drive, Staines.
Unfortunately one of the lads, Olly Dakin decided he didn’t want to pursue a career in Painting & Decorating and he left the program. The other three carried on and attained a Level 1 Award in Health & Safety Awareness which went towards their CSCS card achievement.

At the end of the work experience program Alex Barrett was offered and accepted an apprenticeship with DW Contractors. Site manager Eddie Doherty was so impressed with the other two he took them both on as trainees and they will be undergoing an on-site assessment training program in 2015 to enable them to achieve NVQ L2 in Decorative Finishing & Industrial Painting.

Elliott & Keith John

Mr John Snr. commenced his career with the Company as an Apprentice Painter & Decorator and gained his experience working on Cyclical Redecoration and Repair Contracts. Keith successfully completed his City & Guilds in his trade.

Keith recently commented 'I joined DW at the start of my career and worked my way up through the ranks to the position of Contract Manager. During this time, DW extended to me an opportunity to develop both professionally and personally by providing the appropriate resources and training. My son, Elliott, has commenced his working life with DW and I have no doubt he will be extended the same opportunities to develop his career'.

Elliott added, 'I am enjoying working for DW as I have obtained a great deal of experience in life skills as well as in my chosen trade. DW has given me an opportunity to work on different types of contracts in a range of geographical locations. I look forward to shortly completing my Apprenticeship and progressing in the Company'.

DW Contractors are committed to employing Apprentices in most trades and investing in people for the future.
